Council’s Mario movie night a super start to school holidays

Global smash hit The Super Mario Movie will kick off a bumper schedule of Council-supported events for the school holidays at Riverway Oval from 6:30pm this Friday night.

The Super Mario Movie will play on the big screen as part of Council’s Riverway Movie Nights, an open-air cinema under the stars every third Friday of the month.

Based on the beloved Nintendo video game characters Mario, his brother Luigi and their friends in the Mushroom Kingdom, this animated blockbuster is sure to delight families and kids of all ages.

Community and Cultural Development Committee chairperson Ann-Maree Greaney said this Friday’s free event at Riverway Oval is just the start of a host of great free and low-cost events supported by Council to help keep kids entertained these school holidays.

“Our Riverway Move nights are always a hit with families and checking out The Super Mario Movie with family and friends under the stars is a fantastic way to kick off the September school holidays,” Cr Greaney said.

“Council’s September School Holiday Guide is jam-packed a diverse list of activities and we’re confident there’s something in there to interest kids of all ages.

“We have tons of different sporting programs, science activities, different craft programs and tons of wonderful activities for kids of all ages.”

Printed copies of the guide are available at City Libraries at Aitkenvale and Flinders Street. Copies are also available at the Visitor Information Centre in Flinders Square, the Community Information Centre in Flinders Street and at Council Customer Service currently located at 143 Walker Street.

The guide also has information on puppetry workshops, a tree planting event, youth yoga classes, skateboarding lessons, museum exhibitions and many more great activities.

“In our recent Community Sentiment Survey 86 per cent of Townsville residents backed Council’s goal of making Townsville a city where there’s a lot for people to do, including in the arts, sports, events and recreational activities,” Cr Greaney said.
