Students Take Centre Stage For Upstanders Performance

Students, families and teachers gathered at Beaumaris Secondary College this week to celebrate the 2026 Upstanders program with a special musical theatre performance led by local artist and former Billilla Studio artist Sarah Bowers.

Now in its 14th year, Upstanders is an anti-bullying initiative that helps young people build social and emotional skills while using creativity to promote positive community messages.

This year, 120 Grade 5 students from Sandringham Primary School, Beaumaris Primary School, Brighton Beach Primary School and Hampton Primary School took part in a series of workshops exploring the theme of empathy through musical theatre.

Through a musical theatre performance featuring You’ve Got a Friend in Me, Who Says, Count on Me and Brave, students explored themes of friendship, confidence and courage. Their performance encouraged audiences to reflect on the importance of empathy, kindness and supporting others when they encounter bullying.

This year also marks the fifth year of the partnership between Bayside City Council’s Arts and Culture team and local schools in delivering the program. Together, they continue to empower students to speak up, find their voice and be active supporters of their peers.

Congratulations to all participating students, teachers, families and Sarah Bowers on another inspiring Upstanders program.
