The Victorian Government funded and managed project, starting this summer, is a rebuild of the existing pier which is reaching the end of its 50-year design life.
The new structure will provide improved recreational space for more people to enjoy. It will feature public access out onto the bay, improved views of St Kilda and the City skyline, better protection and a viewing area for the Little Penguins, a wider disability compliant walkway, new toilets, tiered seating and preservation of the precinct’s heritage features.
Our Council is partnering with Parks Victoria to fund additional works to complement the rebuild. We have provided $2.2 million for improvements including connecting the pier to Jacka Boulevard and the foreshore promenade, creating a safer and more welcoming entrance point.
Council funded works also include:
- Upgrading the Bay Trail between the pier and Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron, ensuring the finish and character is in line with the rest of the foreshore promenade
- Increasing green public space adjacent to the pier through redesigning the Sea Baths car park entry and creating a safe bus drop off point.
Design work is about to begin and we will consult with our community about these works in 2022.
Throughout construction, protection will be in place for the Mirka Mora artwork near the pier and the promenade will remain open for bike riders and pedestrians. Access will also be retained to the St Kilda Sea Baths car park and the Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron.
We will continue to advocate to the Victorian Government, and seek funding support, to install the permanent bay access for people with a disability to enter the water via a ramp near the pier, which was included in the concept plans for this project.
