Council supporting 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign

16 Days of Activism is a worldwide gender-based campaign that aims to raise awareness and strengthen local interventions against gender-based violence.

A series of activities and initiatives will be held locally from today, Wednesday 25 November to Thursday 10 December and are an opportunity for the Central Goldfields community to band together to reject violence and encourage conversations about preventing violence.

Central Goldfields Shire Mayor Cr Chris Meddows-Taylor said the 16 Days of Activism is a time to actively promote gender equality and take a stand to end men’s violence against women.

“Our community is running a number of activities and initiatives to support the campaign including the talking piece Elephant in the Room, The Walk Against Family Violence, Zonta Flowerbed in Philips Gardens and the Little People Display at the Maryborough Resource Centre.

“We are working closely with our networks such as women’s health services, family violence networks, libraries and local businesses to spread this important message and prevent family violence.”

Community members can join the following activities across the Central Goldfields:

Wednesday 25 November, 11am

Zonta Flowerbed Launch

Phillips Gardens, Maryborough

Zonta members will place an orange lady (representing victims of violence) at the specially planted flowerbed in Phillips Gardens to mark each day of the 16 days of activism.

Wednesday 25 November, 12pm

Gender and Disaster Pod Online Webinar

The effect of disaster on women, men and people with diverse gender and sexual identities is long-lasting and harmful. The social impacts of COVDI-19 and bushfires are almost identical, with very few differences.

This panel will explore a wide range of topics relating to gender expectations and impacts during bushfires and COVID19. Register here

The Walk Against Family Violence

Help raise awareness of family violence against women in our community by doing a “walk from home”. Wear something orange, a face mask, hat or t-shirt and go for a walk with a friend or others around the block or in the park.

You can show your support for victim-survivors and help send a message across Victoria that family and domestic violence is never okay.

Elephant in the Room

Maryborough District Health Service will host Ellie the Elephant in the foyer of the Maryborough hospital in order to raise awareness, provoke conversation, encourage action towards ending family violence and encourage those experiencing violence to seek support.

Little People Display

Collect a bag full of information about local and state-wide family violence and other support services from here and other locations including Maryborough District Health Service, Maryborough Community House, Dunolly Community House, the Hub, Goldfields Children’s Centre and more.
