Council to consider 2021-22 Annual Report

The City of Greater Geelong’s annual report, providing a detailed overview of the organisation’s performance during the 2021-22 financial year, will be considered by the Council during its meeting on Tuesday 25 October.

The report details the work carried out towards achieving the strategic priorities during the first year of the Council’s four-year Our Community Plan 2021-25.

In a joint message, Mayor Peter Murrihy and Acting CEO Kaarina Phyland highlight the progress on environmental sustainability initiatives in 2021-22, citing a 29 per cent drop in the organisation’s carbon emissions driven by a switch to renewable energy for all electricity use.

“We also continued to trial the use of innovative products made from recycled materials in road reconstruction projects and completed stage one of Victoria’s largest streetlight upgrade program – switching around 13,000 of our streetlights to energy efficient LEDs,” the message says.

In addition, the Mayor and CEO highlight the organisation’s $195.7 million capital works investment, including community facilities such as swimming pools, playgrounds, sporting club pavilions and community hubs.

And they reflect on the finalisation of several significant plans and strategies to drive the organisation’s work into the future, notably the endorsement by Reconciliation Australia of Council’s first Reconciliation Action Plan.

Alongside a detailed recap of the Council’s strategic highlights, the annual report also provides a snapshot of the varied work done by staff on a day-to-day basis in serving the community.

It notes, for example, that during the financial year the City:

  • made 12.1 million kerbside bin collections;
  • replaced 14.3km of footpaths;
  • processed 44,519 dog and cat registrations;
  • had 8000 participants in its youth programs;
  • created 6,900 tonnes of compost from collected garden waste;
  • received 1726 planning permit applications; and
  • made 1603 COVID support visits to local businesses.

The annual report also includes the City’s Annual Financial Statement, which was endorsed by the Council in principle during a special meeting on Wednesday 12 October.
