Council turns off parking meters in Caloundra and Birtinya

As a further measure to assist members of our community manage the impacts of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and national public health directions, Sunshine Coast Council has turned off all on-street parking meters in Birtinya and Caloundra until at least June 30, 2020.

Sunshine Coast Council Mayor and Local Disaster Management Group Chair Mark Jamieson said over the last few weeks, council had been working on a number of measures to assist the community during this time, which have included temporarily ceasing metered parking in Council controlled areas.

“The decision to temporarily turn off the on-street parking meters in the Sunshine Coast Health Precinct at Birtinya follows recent consultation with the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service and aligns with Council’s decision to turn off the parking meters in Caloundra,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“Our decision also recognises that at this time, the last thing that visitors to the Sunshine Coast Health Precinct will want to be concerned about is the risk of contracting the virus from operating the high-touch point parking meters.

“Parking time limits will still apply to encourage turnover to maximise parking availability.

Council’s parking officers have ceased issuing parking infringements, unless the infringement relates to public health and safety issues or involves unauthorised parking in disabled parking spaces.

Council is responsible for managing only 2% of the parking in the Sunshine Coast Health Precinct, with more than 4000 parking spaces available within the precinct’s multi-level car parks, which are privately run and not controlled or owned by Council.
