Council Wins Keep Australia Beautiful Award: Bayside

Bayside Council was a winner in the Keep Australia Beautiful NSW Sustainable Cities Awards on Thursday 12 October 2023.

Bayside Council won the Community and Engagement Award for its community awareness program highlighting the hazards of putting batteries in general waste bins.

These awards, running since 1994, recognise and support the achievements of councils and local communities that are actively working towards making Sydney a model for sustainable practices.

Bayside Council was also shortlisted as a finalist in 6 category awards in addition to being a finalist for the Overall Sustainable Cities Award, demonstrating Council’s wide-reaching commitment to sustainability.

Bayside Mayor Bill Saravinovski was full of praise for Bayside staff and their commitment to sound environmental practices.

“I congratulate everyone involved in ensuring Council’s success in this year’s Keep Australia Beautiful Awards,” Mayor Bill Saravinovski said.

“Bayside Council is a leader in environmental innovation and community engagement, and this award proves it.”

Bayside Council takes proactive measures to enhance community awareness, safety education, and staff training to prevent future incidents, safeguarding the environment and Council property.

This collaborative effort has delivered a comprehensive approach to fire prevention in Council’s waste trucks.

In addition to Council’s award, local community groups also won the following awards:

  • Winner Heritage, Culture and Community Spirit – Bringing Country Back to Wetlands (Wildflower project in Bayside LGA)
  • Highly Commended Local Legends (>65) – Biodiversity Predator-Safe Pontoons (The Fix It Sister Shed project in Bayside Council)

Wildflower is contracted by Sydney Airport to maintain a native area in Botany Wetland.

Bayside Council worked closely with the Fix It Sisters to install floating islands in Sir Joseph Banks Park to provide safe nesting areas for swans and turtles. The islands were launched earlier this year, and several cygnets hatched recently.
