Councillors vote in new committee chairs

Orange Council

Orange City Council has adopted a committee system and voted in new committee chairs to ensure the Orange community continues to have a voice on how the city operates.

Orange Mayor Jason Hamling said the new policy committee chairs bring a mix of fresh faces and experience.

The Policy Committees cover the main functions of council.

FRESH FACES: Orange City Council has elected its committee chairs for this term.

The new chairs are:

  • Planning and Development Policy Committee – Cr Jeff Whitton: Policy matters on planning, building and health, including land use and environmental planning
  • Employment and Economic Development Policy Committee – Cr Tony Mileto: Policy matters on job creation strategies, employment, economic development initiatives and incentives
  • Infrastructure Policy Committee – Cr Jack Evans: Policy matters on road, water, sewer, traffic and transport, emergency services, the airport and major projects
  • Sport and Recreation Policy Committee – Cr Tammy Greenhalgh: Policy matters on sport planning and development and outdoor recreation and events
  • Environmental Sustainability Policy Committee – Cr David Mallard: Policy matters on climate change, environmental sustainability, city presentation and promotion
  • Finance Policy Committee – Cr Kevin Duffy: Policy matters on prudent financial planning
  • Services Policy Committee – Cr Mel McDonell: Policy matters on community and social services, cultural services and the development of Spring Hill, Lucknow and Clifton Grove

“These policy committees are the pointy end of decision making” Cr Hamling said.

“The new councillors will bring a new perspective and that is really healthy for the Council and the community. There is also a lot of experience in the leadership roles so that delivers a good mix as well.”

The Council meeting also adopted the community committee structure with 23 committees.

“Now that we have the structure adopted the next step is to get the community involved,” Cr Hamling said.

“With 23 committees there is good range of specialties to get involved in. We have been really well-served by community participation in the past and I am sure we will be again.”
