Cr Les Power: People out in droves

It was wonderful to see the influx of visitors to Horsham over the long weekend. Congratulations to the organisers of our local events, particularly the Horsham Fishing Competition and Horsham Motocross which attracted a combined 2000 people to our area.

Earlier this month I had a great time at the Wimmera River Parkrun’s Cops and Robbers day.

The event was a fantastic opportunity to create positive community engagement with Victoria Police using the event as a recruiting drive for new members.

It involved 180 participants who jumped at the chance to dress up for the themed event with members of the Horsham and Hamilton Police stations and CIRT (Critical Incident Response Team) hot on their heels.

There were many participants trying out Parkrun for the first time which was excellent to see.

Feedback from the runners was that the riverfront is a fantastic place to exercise. A few people also mentioned how the proposed Hamilton Street pedestrian bridge would allow people to complete a nice loop from the Anzac Bridge to Hamilton Street and back.

Proposals for a bridge across the Wimmera River at Hamilton Street date back to at least 2010 when the idea was raised through community feedback.

The bridge would connect residential areas (about 2000 people) with the central activity and business district as well as creating connections with four schools and the hospital on the western side of the river.

Being a pedestrian bridge as opposed to a road, it would mean it could be completed within a year.

A second road bridge is also a priority for Horsham and that is being addressed through the longer term alternative truck route planning.

At the moment Council is seeking Victorian Government funding to make the pedestrian bridge happen. Fingers crossed that we get some good news.

It’s finals time for our summer sports including tennis and cricket. I’d like to congratulate everyone for their participation and support to make the respective seasons so successful.

Special mention should go to the cricket and tennis club volunteers who work very hard to produce top quality courts and pitches that the players young and old can enjoy.

It’s easy to underestimate how much time and effort it takes, so well done to you all.
