Creating Jobs: Another CBD Revitalising Project

The TerritoryLabor Government has today released a tender to further revitalise Austin Laneas part of the historic $200 million Cities Deal.

Thisjob-creating development – the Austin Lane Streetscape Project will helptransform Darwin CBD into a more pedestrian-friendly space, focusing on creatingcooling spaces between buildings.

Working inpartnership with the City of Darwin, the Governments vision is to enhanceSmith Street Mall, Rain Tree Park and Knuckey Street by creating inviting andengaging experiences for visitors and locals moving through Austin Lane tothese destinations.

This work willfocus on the walkways between Cavenagh Street and The Mall and will include theinstallation of new tree plantings, two new covered walkways to cool the area,while also installing seating and upgraded kerbing to make it morepedestrian-friendly.

Austin Lane hasalready proven to be an exciting space for showcasing local artwork, withseveral spectacular street murals unveiled in the lane as part of the DarwinStreet Art Festival.

The project willfurther enhance the area and is part of the Governments wider vision for acooler CBD, which includes the Cavenagh Street heat mitigation projects.

Works for theAustin Lane project are expected start in June 2019, and be completed by the endof 2019.

The project is one ofa number of developments in the CBD which will create many more jobs andrevitalise this city.

This isanother exciting project released as part of the Cities Deal and will buildDarwins reputation as a tropical, world-renowned destination, attracting newresidents and creating jobs.

Enhancing the area and reducing the impact ofheat on those who live, work in and visit the CBD will encourage more people topatronize the area, opening the space and creating further opportunities todeliver greater economic and social benefits in the city.
