A critical incident has been declared after a man was shot following a confrontation with police at Bankstown this evening.
Two officers from the Police Transport Command had parked in a carpark of a shopping centre on North Terrace about 7.20pm (Saturday 28 November 2020), when they were approached by a man.
Police will allege the man produced a knife and ran towards them, threatening the officers.
Shots were fired by police during the confrontation, with the 40-year-old man sustaining a wound to the leg.
The man has been taken under police guard to Liverpool Hospital in a stable condition.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incidents are ongoing.
A critical incident team from Cumberland Police Area Command will now investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The investigation will also be subject to independent review.
