The Crisafulli Government is delivering easier access to maternity, birthing and paediatric care for families across the Gladstone region with the official opening of Gladstone Hospital’s new Women and Family Centre.
The service marks another milestone under the Crisafulli Government’s fully funded Hospital Rescue Plan which is healing Labor’s Health Crisis after a decade of decline that saw Gladstone residents suffer ageing hospital infrastructure and extended birthing bypass.
This more than $16 million facility is just one of the investments the Crisafulli Government is making in health services for Central Queenslanders and is complemented by the new, and recently opened, Gladstone Hospital Transit Lounge and the Gladstone Hospital modular expansion that will deliver 51 additional beds and treatment spaces in 2027.
Staff and locals gathered to celebrate the official opening of the Women and Family Centre, touring the purpose-built facility which includes:
- 13 single maternity rooms with ensuites,
- 2 birthing rooms,
- 2 early labour and induction suites,
- A dedicated nursery for newborn care, and
- 8 single ensuite rooms for paediatric patients.
Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Tim Nicholls said Queenslanders deserved state-of-the-art care, no matter where they live.
“This purpose-built space enhances care for women and children, ensuring treatment can be carried out in a calm, safe and supportive environment,” Minister Nicholls said.
“Gladstone Hospital was a system in crisis under the former Labor Government with no masterplan, neglected maintenance and birthing on bypass.
“After a decade of decline, the Crisafulli Government is getting on with delivering the infrastructure and services Gladstone families deserve.”
Member for Callide Bryson Head said this new facility highlighted the Crisafulli Government’s commitment to delivering world-class care closer to home.
“This is a one-of-a-kind facility right here in Gladstone, servicing a large part of Central Queensland,” Mr Head said.
“Quality maternity care in the regions is something communities have been asking for, and this is what the Crisafulli Government is delivering.
“This exciting new facility will be utilised for many years to come, and I’ve already heard great feedback from the community and the experiences of mums who have already birthed here.”
Central Queensland Hospital and Health Service Chief Executive Lisa Blackler said the new centre represented a significant investment in family-centred care and would strengthen health services across the Gladstone region.
“It was wonderful to celebrate this milestone with the teams who have worked so hard to bring the project to life, and we look forward to supporting families in this space for many years to come,” Ms Blackler said.
“The Women and Family Centre provides a welcoming, contemporary environment that supports our commitment to delivering high-quality maternity and paediatric care close to home.
“As a nurse and midwife, I am passionate about ensuring our birthing spaces support privacy, comfort and family connection during such an important time.”
