A critical incident investigation has been launched after a man was seriously injured during a foot chase with police in Blacktown last month.
About 9.30am on Thursday 27 June 2019, police initiated a pursuit with a Ford utility travelling on Lock Street, Blacktown, after it failed to stop when directed for a random breath test.
The pursuit ended a short time later on Newhaven Street, when the Ford crashed into a parked vehicle.
Two passengers – a 16-year-old boy and 56-year-old man – were arrested outside the vehicle.
The driver fled the vehicle on foot, before being arrested after falling over a gate. He was taken to Westmead Hospital to be treated for spinal injuries and lacerations to his head.
Following medical examination and additional tests, it was determined the man sustained serious spinal injuries. As a consequence, a critical incident investigation team from Northern Beaches Police Area Command will now investigate all circumstances surrounding the incident. That investigation will be subject to independent review.
The 25-year-old man has been issued with a Court Attendance Notice for police pursuit – not stop – drive recklessly, and driving while disqualified.
The matter is due to appear before Blacktown Local Court on Tuesday 17 September 2019.
The 16-year-old boy and 56-year-old man have already been charged with numerous offences and remain before the courts.
