A critical incident investigation is underway after a man was injured following a vehicle stop in Sydney’s south today.
Just before 10am (Tuesday 12 July 2022), officers from South Sydney Police Area Command stopped a Ford Falcon – reportedly stolen earlier this month from West Pennant Hills – on Elliot Avenue, Erskineville.
The front male passenger got out and fled, pursued by police. The Ford was driven at a police officer, and a firearm was discharged.
The passenger, a 38-year-old man, was arrested shortly after following a foot pursuit. He was taken to Mascot Police Station.
Following inquiries, the Ford was located a short time later at a service station on the Hume Highway near Frederick Street, Croydon.
The driver, a 36-year-old man, was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics, before being taken to hospital under police guard. He is in a stable condition.
Two crime scenes have been established and a critical incident team from Sydney City Police Area Command will now investigate all circumstances surrounding the incident.
That investigation will be subject to an independent review.
