Cultural knowledge is key

Those attending the 2019 ACEM Winter Symposium in April have a chance to build their cultural capabilities at the Indigenous cultural competency workshop.

The presenter will be Wairangi Jones, a former school teacher and principal of more than 35 years.

He has set up his own te reo Māori and tikanga Māori consultancy, Tūtira Mai NZ.

The workshop will offer participants an awareness of indigenous approaches to hauora (health and wellbeing). Based on an holistic framework, participants will learn the pou (pillars) of hauora and their interconnection for a balanced and healthy individual.

The workshop will be taught using traditional learning styles. Participants will find the workshop engaging, fun and highly interactive as deep cultural knowledge is shared and explained. This will be an important step towards building cultural capabilities relevant to both Australian and New Zealand clinicians, who seek to grow their skill base.

This workshop is an approved Cultural Competency Activity for ACEM CPD.

Upon leaving his role at Rotorua Boys’ High School, Jones told media he was on a mission to help New Zealand embrace Māori.

“In the time I’ve got left I’m going to be taking te reo Māori and tikanga to work places around New Zealand. Showing them how they can use te reo and tikanga to enhance their own business practices,” he told the Rotorua Daily Post.

“What I’m doing now has been formed here. I’m now going out, still teaching and carrying te reo and tikanga, but to other places and to ears that need to be opened and eyes that need to see.”
