Cumberland Council to unite Western Sydney in a march to end violence against women and girls

Cumberland Council is raising awareness of gender-based violence and local support services available to the community, as part of the United Nations’ 16 days of Activism campaign.

The 16 days of Activism starts on International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on 25 November and runs until Human Rights Day on 10 December.

On Wednesday 29 November, Council will be hosting the Western Sydney Women’s March through Merrylands in partnership with the Domestic and Family Violence Community of Practice to help raise community awareness of the prevalence and impact of gender based violence against women and girls.

Cumberland Mayor Lisa Lake expressed how proud she was that Council continues to raise awareness for such an important cause.

“Violence of any kind against women and girls affects many around the world, with 1 in 3 women experiencing violence throughout their lifetime, so this event is another opportunity for us to work collaboratively with the community to shed a light on this scourge,” she said.

“Cumberland Council is dedicated to ensuring the safety of our community. We currently have a three year Domestic and Family Violence (DFV) Action Plan which outlines our commitment to working towards ending DFV in Cumberland.”

Council’s Western Sydney Women’s March will begin at 1:30pm at Merrylands Oval, Corner of Burnett Street and Merrylands Road, and will end at the Merrylands Civic Square, where participants will hear from keynote speakers, and enjoy performances, food and cold drinks.

The 16 Days of Activism is a globally recognised campaign that was started by activists in 1991 at the inauguration of the Women’s Global Leadership Institute. The campaign calls on people to raise awareness for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls.
