Cutting Youth Crime: New Palmerston Youth Outreach Hub

The Territory Labor Government has established a new Youth Outreach and Re-engagement Team (YORET) hub in the Palmerston CBD.

The Palmerston YORET hub provides voluntary and court-ordered case management and services to young people aged 10-17 years who are at-risk of entering, or are already involved in the youth justice system.

The facility is large enough that other relevant service providers will be able to use the space to deliver their services.

Youth Outreach and Re-engagement Officers (YOREOs) in the team work with young people and their families to prevent young people from offending or reoffending.

The activities and programs delivered at the facility include tackling anti-social behaviour, role modelling, gender respect and understanding. YOREOs will also reconnect young people to education and training, counselling, and medical services so that they can get back on the right track.

The YORET is part of a number of early intervention and prevention programs and services that the Territory Labor Government introduced to try to prevent crime before it happens.

The Palmerston YORET hub is located on Chung Wah Terrace at the former police station.

As noted by Member for Drysdale, Eva Lawler:

“The Territory Labor Government is creating safer communities by investing in youth services that will reduce youth crime and anti-social behaviour.

“The YOREOs are specialist youth workers who work to prevent young people from entering the youth justice system, but also prevent young people from reoffending.

“This is unlike the CLP who slashed youth services when they were in Government and will do it again if they get a chance.”

As noted by Member for Brennan, Tony Sievers:

“The Territory Labor Government is investing in the people of Palmerston. The new Palmerston YORET hub will give at-risk young people a place to go to get specialist help that will address anti-social and criminal behaviour.

“This is in addition to the Palmerston Youth Drop-in Centre which will engage all young people in structured activities and keep them off the streets at night.”
