Cycleway section identified for solar lighting

A location has been identified for new solar lighting along the Armidale Cycleway and tenders for its construction will be called this week.

Council will install the lighting between Markham Street and the Donnelly Street bridge, following advice from Armidale police because of the high number of users on that section and police records of previous incidents.

“Assistance from the Federal Government’s Safer Communities Fund is enabling us to install an initial section on the cycleway and police assistance has been valuable in identifying where it can be most effective to improve community safety,” Armidale Regional Council Mayor Simon Murray said.

“It is hoped the detailed design process and quotes from contractors might identify opportunities to install further lighting and extend this section.

“Council will continue to advocate for additional funding so further lighting can be added to other critical links within the cycleway to improve safety.”

Construction of the initial section of lighting is scheduled to begin in mid 2020.

Council received $450,000 in funding through Round 3 of the Safer Communities Fund, for a two-part project:

  • Upgrade five CCTV analogue cameras in Armidale’s Beardy Street Mall with digital cameras, including a network upgrade to include optic fibre infrastructure
  • Install and commission 25 solar lights on the cycleway within the Armidale CBD precinct

The CCTV optic fibre infrastructure upgrade was completed last month. Installation of the digital cameras is scheduled to be undertaken in May and is expected to cost $45,000.
