City of Darwin has today provided 30 trees to Nightcliff Primary School, as part of their School Tree Planting Program.
The Program was initiated by Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis following the significant loss of canopy trees during Cyclone Marcus, offering replacement trees to primary and middle schools across Darwin. Each school is then responsible for planting and maintaining the trees.
“Darwin lost more than 10,000 trees during Cyclone Marcus and as a Council we are doing all we can to replace these trees as quickly as possible.”
“We are committed to achieving a more robust and resilient urban forest and to date have planted more than 5,000 trees across Darwin – through community planting days and reforestation projects and our nature strip, parks, reserves and school tree planting programs.”
Member for Nightcliff Natasha Fyles said it was great to see one of her local schools receive 30 trees.
“It is great to see School Tree Planting Program rolling out, and I thank the City of Darwin for bringing this program to fruition.”
Assistant Principal at Nightcliff Primary School, Jill Finch said she was delighted to accept the offer of trees from City of Darwin.
“Nightcliff Primary lost a significant number of trees from our school grounds and the addition of these trees will add much needed shade, cooling and greening.”
“The tree planting event we held today has brought our school community together and helped students understand the value of planning for a robust and resilient urban forest for future students.”
It is anticipated the School Tree Planting Program will deliver more than 300 trees to 10 participating schools over the coming months.
City of Darwin’ 2019/20 Budget committed $5.8M to beautification and tree planting projects, with 8,000 trees expected to be planted by mid-2020
