Day 5 – Christmas Road Safety Campaign (phase 2)

In the first five days of the Christmas Road Safety Campaing (phase 2) police have detected over 19,000 speeding motorists (speed camera detections and mobile radars), 190 drink drivers and 127 drivers testing positive at roadside drug driving tests.

Sadly four people have lost their lives since Phase 2 of the road safety campaign commenced on December 23 and a further 107 people have been injured in 91 injury traffic incidents, some critically.

Day five (December 27) saw 13 injury traffic incidents and two fatal traffic incidents – a 7-year-old boy died in a crash involving two trucks at Pampas and a 48-year-old male pushbike rider died after falling from his bicycle at Bushland Beach.

Day five also saw two people driving when more than four times the legal alcohol limit (0.218% at Glenwood and 0.215% at Gympie) and three incidents of drivers speeding at more than 40kms over the legal 100km limit (150km on the Bruce Highway at Bajool, 144kms on Bushs Road, Avondale and 141kms on the Kennedy Highway at Millstream).

Road safety is everyone’s responsibility with police urging motorists to remain vigilant on the roads during the holiday period with tens of thousands of holiday makers traversing our highways and roads.

During the Christmas holiday period (phase 2), Queensland Police will enforce high risk road user behaviour including the fatal five: speeding, fatigue, impaired driving (drink and drug), failure to wear a seat belt and distraction/inattention in a concerted effort to minimise road trauma.

The first five days of phase 2 also saw police issue traffic infringement notices to 65 people for using their mobile phones and 88 people for not wearing seatbelts.

Phase 2 of the Christmas Road Safety Campaign will continue until January 3, 2019.
