Delivering more homes for Tasmanians in need 10 April

Michael Ferguson,Treasurer and Minister State Development, Construction and Housing

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is getting on with delivering the biggest social housing investment in Tasmania’s history.

In the month of March, we’ve completed a stunning 78 new homes for social housing and 45 new blocks of land have been made available. That means a total of 123 social and affordable homes made available for Tasmanians.

I heartily congratulate my team in Housing Tasmania together with our partners.

That’s more homes for Tasmanians in need and more work for Tasmanians, supporting our local construction sector jobs.

This, in addition to ongoing supported accommodation projects like Bethlehem House mean that we are on target to meet our ambitious commitment of 1,500 new homes by 2023.

This is part of our unprecedented $1.5 billion housing package that will deliver 10,000 new social and affordable homes by 2032.

We continue to lead the nation in a host of key economic indicators. Just last week Tasmania was the strongest State for growth in engineering construction in the December quarter. Demonstrating the strength of the sector, a massive $1.69 billion in engineering construction work was completed in 2021, a new 12-month series record.

There is a significant pipeline of work ahead – the latest infrastructure Tasmania 10 year Infrastructure Pipeline forecasts more than $22 billion in planned infrastructure investment, the most substantial capital program in Tasmania’s history.

We are a Government that listens to what really matters to Tasmanians to ensure Tasmanians’ priorities continue to be our priorities.
