Delivering more housing options for Brighton

Members,

Releasing more land for affordable residential housing is critical to the Rockliff Liberal Government’s ambitious plan to deliver 10,000 new social and affordable homes by 2032.

Homes Tasmania has plans for new sub-division that will deliver about 100 new lots in Brighton and the local community is invited to find out more about the project which will mainly be available for affordable home purchase.

Homes Tasmania project staff will be at the Brighton Bowls and Community Club on Wednesday, 28 June, to provide information and answer questions about the subdivision at Elderslie Road. Members of the community are welcome to drop in between 4pm and 6pm.

“We can improve the lives of many Tasmanians by releasing affordable land and providing a range of housing solutions based on their circumstances and stage of life,” Minister Barnett said.

”The majority of new lots will be available for affordable home purchase with the MyHome shared equity program, which has helped about 150 Tasmanian individuals and families into a home in the past year.

“With MyHome, you only need a deposit of two per cent of the purchase price. The cost of buying your home is shared with Homes Tasmania through shared equity.

“Shared equity is available up to a maximum of $200,000 or 40 per cent (whichever is the lesser amount) of the purchase price for purchasers of new homes or house and land packages.

“Homes Tasmania will retain around 15 per cent of the Brighton sub-division lots for future social housing development and lots are expected to be available for purchase from mid-2024.”

Minister Barnett said that the Rockliff Liberal Government knows that increasing housing supply is vital to easing Tasmania’s housing challenges and releasing additional land for affordable and social housing is part of our plan.
