Hours usually worked represent an average work week across all employed people, while hours actually worked cover the week prior to being surveyed, including overtime and time spent away from work.
The decrease in actual and usual hours worked coincides with 15,000 more people employed part-time and 17,000 fewer people employed full-time in the September 2026 quarter (seasonally adjusted).
- 11,000 more men were employed part-time.
- 3,000 more women were employed part-time.
- 16,000 fewer men were employed full-time.
- 2,000 fewer women were employed full-time.
Annually, the number of people working fewer hours than usual in their main job increased by 78,100 (21.7 percent) to 438,100 (not seasonally adjusted). This came predominantly from an increase in the number of people who said they worked fewer hours than usual for holiday reasons (up 59,200 to 146,900).
Holiday reasons can relate to vacations, school holidays, public holidays, or anything else that might be considered by the respondent as ‘holiday reasons’.
In 2026, the Matariki public holiday fell within the September quarter, while in 2024 and 2025, it fell within June quarters.
Labour force participation
The seasonally adjusted labour force participation rate was 70.4 percent, compared with 70.6 percent in the June 2026 quarter.
- For men, the labour force participation rate was 74.3 percent, compared with 74.6 percent last quarter.
- For women, the labour force participation rate was 66.6 percent, compared with 66.7 percent last quarter.
