Delivering on our plan to make West Tamar Highway safer and more efficient

Michael Ferguson,Minister for Infrastructure and Transport

Protecting Tasmanians on our roads is a priority for the Hodgman majority Liberal Government and we are delivering on our commitment to make the West Tamar Highway safer and more efficient.

Tenders for four new projects on the West Tamar Highway have opened today as part of our Government’s $12 million Launceston and Tamar Valley Traffic Vision.

These works will not only improve safety and the reliability of commuting times to and from Launceston for road users, but will also improve liveability for communities along the West Tamar.

The proposed upgrades include sections of the West Tamar Highway from north of Rosevears Drive to Gravelly Beach Road, Atkinsons Road to Waldhorn Drive, Exeter to Batman Highway, and Motor Road junction.

The scope of work at each location is different, and proposed works include road widening, shoulder sealing, road resurfacing, new overtaking opportunities, a new footpath, vegetation clearing to improve visibility and improvements to stormwater drainage.

Feedback from stakeholder consultations held earlier this year has informed the upgrade designs.

Construction on the projects is expected to start in early 2020 with completion expected in mid-2021.

I’m thrilled to be able to reward the trust that the community placed in the Hodgman majority Liberal Government, when they re-elected us last year. We are doing exactly what we promised on a vital major road.
