Sustainability Victoria’s Detox your Home event is coming to Hamilton on Saturday 2 April 2022 where Southern Grampians residents will have the opportunity to clean out their unwanted household chemicals.
Detox your Home is a free service enabling Southern Grampians residents to safely dispose of unwanted household chemicals commonly found in and around sheds and homes.
Southern Grampians Shire Council Director Infrastructure Marg Scanlon said it’s great to be able to host a ‘Detox your Home’ event in Hamilton.
“Products such as weedkiller, pesticides, cleaning chemicals, cosmetics, and cooking oil are all materials harmful to the environment which should not be placed in kerbside bins or poured down sinks,” said Ms Scanlon.
“We encourage residents to take the opportunity to clean out their homes and garages before Easter to help keep these potentially harmful products out of landfill and our homes and to keep our waterways and environment clean.
“Detox your Home will be available at the Hamilton Transfer Station on Saturday 2 April where staff from Sustainability Victoria will be on hand from 9:00am – 12:00pm to collect household chemicals and waste items. Registrations are essential so please get online today and sign up to play your part in detoxing your home,” concluded Ms Scanlon.
Common chemicals collected include:
- Fuels and flammable liquids – turpentine, methylated spirits, petrol, kerosene, diesel, paint thinners
- Garden – herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers, pool chemicals, poisons
- Household – cleaners, bleach, ammonia, oven cleaner, solvents, cooking oil, cosmetics, fire extinguishers
- Car – wax, transmission fluid, body filler, brake fluid.
Detox your Home will be staffed by expert chemists who identify and sort the chemicals for safe transport back to a licenced facility in Melbourne where they are processed for reuse or safe disposal.
Chemicals collected are processed and recovered, or recycled where possible. If items cannot be reused in any way, they are safely disposed of.
