Digging deep into Bendigo’s gold mining history

Important pieces of Victoria’s mining history dating back to the 1850s are now in the safe hands of historians, following a clean-up at the former Bendigo Gold mining site at Kangaroo Flat.

To preserve Bendigo’s gold rush history, 19 boxes of records and 1350 old photos stored at the site were scanned and provided to the Bendigo Historical Society and the Goldfields Library Corporation.

Volunteers also scanned about 40 bookshelves of newspaper clippings to help record geological drilling locations. Almost 200 boxes containing survey data, permits, contracts, board papers, mining leases and workforce records were also saved.

The Bendigo Historical Society has made the information available to researchers.

The Earth Resources Regulator is overseeing the rehabilitation of the former Kangaroo Flat mining site. The Swan Decline, the primary gateway to Bendigo’s historical underground mining, is now permanently sealed.
