Dirt Doctors Geotechnical Testing Services, a company which provides waste classification services, was found guilty in Picton Local Court for supplying false information about waste.

The offence related to a waste classification report authored by Dirt Doctors that falsely claimed to classify material at premises in Canley Heights.

Dirt Doctors claimed to have sampled and classified material to be removed from the Canley Heights premises that could not have been sampled on the date stated in their report as excavation works did not commence at the site until about four months later.

Before the hearing, Dirt Doctors went into a creditors voluntary winding up and a liquidator was appointed.

The Court convicted Dirt Doctors of the offence, issued a fine of $4,000 and ordered it to pay $9,000 in legal costs to the Environment Protection Authority.

EPA Executive Director Regulatory Operations, Carmen Dwyer, said providing accurate information about waste was essential to safeguard the community and protect the environment.

“Offences like this can cause harm to the environment as the recipient of that waste could handle material inappropriately on the basis of a false waste classification report”, Ms Dwyer said.

“Excavated material can serve many purposes but if material is contaminated it needs to be clear, so it can be managed properly.”

Anyone can report concerns regarding waste and waste classification to the EPA on 131 555.

All complaints made to the Environment Line are directed to EPA officers in the field so they can target those areas of most concern to the community.
