The Minister for Disabilities Natasha Fyles today attended the Council of Australian Governments Disability Reform Council in Perth to further deliver outcomes for Territorians living with a disability.
The Northern Territory completed transition to the NDIS in July 2019 and more than 2,600 Territorians currently have National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) Plans. The transition to the NDIS has been significant for both participants and service providers.
The Northern Territory Government acknowledges the work that has been done to date by both participants, service providers and the NDIA but recognises there is still progress to be made.
At the Council meeting today, Ministers discussed the development of a new National Disability Strategy beyond 2020 and the importance of independent disability advocacy.
Ministers acknowledge the need to address thin markets and welcomed the Commonwealth commitment to specific projects in each jurisdiction to address their needs.
As stated by Minister for Disabilities, Natasha Fyles:
“The Territory Labor Government will continue to ensure Territorians living with disability have access to safe and reliable services no matter where the live or how old they are.
“The Northern Territory welcomes the announcements today for market driven projects in the Northern Territory to address specific issues to improve accessibility to the scheme for Territorians.
“All Territorians deserve to live a full and active life with access to the support they need. Changes to allow Territory Families to access NDIS plans for children living with disability will enable increased update of services for Territory kids.
