Disqualified driver caught twice in two days at Lake Illawarra, NSW

A disqualified driver has been charged after he was allegedly caught behind the wheel in the state’s Illawarra yesterday.

About 11.40am (Tuesday 17 May 2022), officers attached to Lake Illawarra Highway Patrol detected a sedan allegedly travelling above the sign-posted speed limit and driving in a dangerous manner along Five Islands Road, Cringila.

Officers pulled the driver over, with checks revealing he was disqualified from driving November this year, after having been issued a Court Attendance Notice the night before.

The driver, a 28-year-old man, was subject to a roadside drug test, which allegedly returned a positive detection to methylamphetamine; the results of which will undergo further analysis. Officers also seized cannabis, drug paraphernalia and prescription medication from the vehicle.

He was arrested and taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station where he was charged with

  • Drive motor vehicle during disqualification period – second offence
  • Possess prohibited drug
  • Possess/attempt to, prescribed restricted substance
  • Possession of equipment for administering prohibited drugs

The Warrawong man appeared in Wollongong Local Court today (Wednesday 18 May 2022), where he was formally refused bail to appear in the same court on Tuesday 31 May 2022.
