DNA technology leads Sex Crime Squad detectives to the ‘Moore Park Rapist’ – Strike Force Girtab

Sex Crime Squad detectives have arrested and charged a man following an investigation into a number of alleged historical sexual assaults in Sydney in the 1990s.

Between 1991 and 1993, at least 10 women were allegedly sexually assaulted in the Moore Park and Inner West areas of Sydney, causing media to dub the offender as the ‘Moore Park Rapist’ or ‘Night Stalker’.

Task Force Park was subsequently established; however, no one was convicted.

In 2022, the Forensic Evidence and Technical Services Command (FETSC) and State Crime Command’s Sex Crimes Squad established a new initiative to review historic sexual assaults using modern DNA and fingerprint technologies.

As a result, the Task Force Park investigation was re-examined by Sex Crimes Squad under Strike Force Girtab.

Following extensive inquiries using these new technologies, strike force detectives – with assistance from the Australian Federal Police and Australian Border Force – arrested a 60-year-old man at Sydney International Airport about 9am yesterday (Thursday 29 February 2024).

The man was taken to Mascot Police Station, where he was charged with 33 offences against eight of the 10 victims, including 16 counts of aggravated sexual assault, eight counts of indecent assault, three counts of assault causing actual bodily harm, two counts of detain for advantage, two counts of robbery with offensive weapon, and two counts of attempted sexual assault.

He was refused bail to appear at Downing Centre Local Court today (Friday 1 March 2024).
