A proposal for a new dog park at Eltham Lower Park is sure to set tails wagging.
Council is seeking feedback on preliminary designs for the dog park through Participate Nillumbik until Sunday 15 October.
The proposed designs would see the new dog park located on the open space previously leased to the Eastern Region Adult Riding Club and Eltham District Horse and Pony Club. Council will support the clubs in relocating to a new site.
The dog park would include two separate areas for small/quiet dogs and large/active breeds, both with natural play elements, shelters and seating, drinking stations and dog-safe fencing. Equipment such as tunnels or obstacles could be added.
There would also be a 90m straight, fenced greyhound run, the first in the Shire.
Other features include a dog park viewing area with shelters and seating, paths connections and revegetation along the corridor to Lenister Farm.
The Federal Member for Jagajaga, Kate Thwaites, committed $2 million during the 2022 Federal Election for a dog park, revegetation works and upgrades to the sports pavilion.
Mayor Ben Ramcharan said Council was keen to hear from the community about the proposal.
“With more than 2500 registered dogs in Eltham, it’s important we provide spaces where they can run and play off-leash, and socialise with other dogs,” Cr Ramcharan.
Wingrove Ward Councillor Geoff Paine said Eltham Lower Park was hugely popular with both locals and visitors alike.
“This is quite a significant change, so we really want to hear what the community has to say about the proposal and we encourage you to share your feedback on Participate Nillumbik,” Cr Paine said.
