Eurobodalla Council is partnering with Batemans Bay’s Village Centre to host a National Recycling Week information kiosk.
Residents can drop-off batteries, printer cartridges, old mobile phones and X-rays for recycling, learn what should and should not go in their household recycling bins, find out more about Council’s free composting and worm farming workshops, and more.
Held in the second week of November, National Recycling Week aims to helps Australians reduce waste and recycle right.
Eurobodalla residents sent about 5,677 tonnes of waste for kerbside recycling in 2020-21, yet about 9 per cent of this – or 510 tonnes – were items that could not be recycled and were instead set to landfill.
Food waste, soft plastics, nappies, paper towel and textiles were common contaminates – as well as recyclables placed inside plastic bags.
Kerbside recycling collected shire-wide is taken to a Material Recovery Facility in Moruya, where it’s sorted by hand and baled according to the different streams. These bales are sold as commodities to various companies for reprocessing.
Anyone wanting to know more about recycling can drop into the shopfront from Monday to Friday, next to Aldi in Batemans Bay’s Village Centre. Staff will be available to chat on Monday 9am-3pm, Tuesday 10am-2pm and Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 10am-2pm.
Village Centre & Bridge Plaza centre manager Glenn Atkins said he was excited about working with Council for National Recycling Week.
“Our goal at Village Centre & Bridge Plaza is to have positive impact on the community and we believe that showcasing the importance of recycling will help to work toward a better Batemans Bay,” he said.
