The gift of organ and tissue donation is life-saving for thousands of Australians each year, just like for young liver transplant recipient Mia.
Mia, age 11, has received 2 life-saving transplants. The first one was at just 4 months old and the second, late last year.
Her family are extremely grateful to Mia’s organ donors, and all donor families who say yes to donation.
Mia has been able to get back to doing the things that she loves, such as hanging out with her friends and swimming squad training.
Right now, there are:
- 1,800 Australians waiting for an organ transplant
- 14,000 on dialysis who may benefit from a kidney transplant
- thousands more who need eye and tissue transplants.
We know 80% of Australians aged 16+ support organ and tissue donation-yet only 7 million are registered. The number should be closer to 16 million.
DonateLife Week 2023, from 23 to 30 July, is Australia’s annual public awareness initiative in support of organ and tissue donation. The theme this year is Donate a minute. Donate a lifetime.
