East Gippsland Shire Council has begun its annual door knock campaign to check cat and dog owners have registered their pets.
Pet registration renewals were due on April 10. Dogs and cats three months of age and older need to be registered with council.
Council’s Community Laws Coordinator Bill Petersen said the door knock will be carried out across the shire over the coming months.
“Registering your dog or cat is required no matter where you live in Victoria, and council needs to ensure residents comply with State animal registration laws,” Mr Petersen said.
“Each year the door knock uncovers residents who have tried to avoid registering their pet. Cat and dog owners who fail to register their pets risk on-the-spot fines of $322.
“Registration makes it possible for us to identify the owners and return treasured pets,” Mr Petersen said.
Council issues lifetime identification tags so owners do not need replace the registration tag each year.
Discount registration fees are available in a range of circumstances, such as when pets are desexed.
