Doors open for new Energex, Ergon apprentices

More highly-prized electrical fitter mechanic and linespeople apprenticeships are available from today with Queensland’s publicly-owned electricity businesses, Ergon Energy and Energex.

Applications open today (10 May) for a mid-year intake of 23 electrical fitter mechanic and linespeople apprenticeships throughout Queensland.

Of the 23, 16 will be based at Energex depots at Raceview, Kelvin Grove, Greenslopes, Berrinba, Maroochydore, Landsborough, Geebung, Banyo, Southport and Burleigh, with the remaining seven Ergon apprentices to be based at Rockhampton, Gladstone, Toowoomba, Bundaberg, Mackay, Cairns and Townsville.

Energy Minister Dr Anthony Lynham said apprenticeships with Energex and Ergon Energy were highly sought after and could lead to rewarding careers in a dynamic industry.

The new recruits will be among more than 120 apprentices who start a career this year with Queensland’s publicly-owned electricity businesses.

Across Queensland, Energex, Ergon, CS Energy and Stanwell already have more than 120 fresh recruits working at their depots and power stations, including 32 women and 11 who identify as being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent.

Dr Lynham said thousands of applicants sought to become apprentices with Energex and Ergon every year.

“Queensland’s world-class electricity distribution networks mean Energex and Ergon apprentices are trained in new technologies, such as alternative energy solutions and smart grids,” he said.

“These apprentices train on some of the largest electricity assets in the world, much of it is cutting edge power distribution technology.

“There has never been a better time to get a trade in the power sector.”

“Energex and Ergon offer excellent training and development programs, to nurture the talent that will drive our electricity distribution networks’ ongoing success.

“They offer some of Queensland’s most popular and exciting trades, as well as the job satisfaction of working hard for your community day and night.”
