Double Honour For Air Force Officer

RAAF

The second week of June 2026 was always going to be a milestone for Wing Commander Susan Yates, but she had no idea it would involve royal recognition.

After 40 years of service, Wing Commander Yates became eligible on June 9 to receive one of Defence’s highest honours: a Federation Star. As if that wasn’t enough, that same week she saw her name on the King’s Birthday honours list.

For her exceptional achievements as national program coordinator of the Women’s Integrated Networking Groups program (WINGs), improving the lives of women in service, and her demonstrated commitment to improving the retention of women in the Royal Australian Air Force, Wing Commander Yates was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in the Military Division.

Wing Commander Yates said she had been eagerly anticipating her Federation Star presentation, but being appointed a Member of the Order of Australia was a huge surprise.

“This recognition will energise me and fulfil my passion to continue supporting the incredibly talented and professional female aviators in our organisation,” Wing Commander Yates said.

“I’ve been actively engaged in the Air Force women’s retention program since November 2011, serving as the national program coordinator for WINGs.

“This program represents a critical capability enabler, with a primary focus on the retention and effective development of female aviators across the service.”

WINGs brings women of all employment groups and ranks together to provide support and advice on a lasting Air Force career, hear from guest speakers on issues affecting women and their careers, and create valuable networks across diverse locations.

Wing Commander Yates’ dedication to WINGs is a reflection of her commitment to improving the lives of women in service, while ensuring the program evolves and expands to deliver strategic and enduring impacts for Air Force.

Under her leadership, WINGs has further evolved over the past four years with the introduction and expansion of Maternity Support Networking Groups across multiple bases. These groups provide targeted support to female aviators who are considering, undertaking, or returning from maternity leave, thereby reinforcing retention outcomes and supporting workforce continuity.
