Draft Rural Roadside Management Plan out for comment

Public safety, controlling weeds and bushfire fuel loads are balanced against protecting the environment in Corangamite Shire Council’s draft Rural Roadside Management Plan.

Mayor Ruth Gstrein has called on residents to read the draft and give their input before the plan is finalised.

“The final plan will help guide some of Council’s works programs for the next 10-years,” Cr Gstrein said.

“It covers Council managed rural roadsides from the shoulder to the property boundary, not the road itself.

“Native vegetation, biodiversity and cultural heritage are all taken into account.

“The draft has been developed based on feedback including public submissions received over the past five months.

“I’d like to thank the Community and Stakeholder Group (CSG) members who have given their time to develop this draft. Now we want to hear from the community who may have different perspectives and constructive ideas to finetune the final document.”

The CSG included seven community members and representatives from a range of organisations, utility providers and Council staff with an interest in rural roadsides.

The draft is built around three key goals, each of which has a number of objectives and actions.

  • Roadsides are safe and all roadside users understand their responsibilities
  • Roadsides are well-managed to protect their wider values
  • Corangamite Shire Council provides strong leadership, embedding best practice in roadside management

Residents are invited to download the plan and leave feedback here or call Council on 5593 7100 for a hardcopy.

Submissions open on Wednesday 27 April and close at 5 pm on Sunday 29 May.
