A driver has been arrested after the allegedly stolen car he was driving during a police pursuit broke down in Sydney’s inner west this morning.
About 4am (Friday 11 September 2026), police were patrolling the Petersham area when they located an allegedly stolen Audi SUV on Crystal Street.
Initial checks revealed the car had been allegedly stolen from a valet parking lot on Bond Street, Sydney, yesterday (Thursday 10 September 2026).
Officers attached to Leichhardt Highway Patrol directed the driver to stop; however, when they allegedly failed to do so a pursuit was initiated.
The pursuit continued down Parramatta Road where the Audi allegedly reached speeds of 180km/h in a 60km/h signposted speed zone.
The pursuit was terminated a short time later due to safety concerns.
Police continued to search the area for the Audi before locating it broken down on Glebe Point Road, Glebe.
The alleged driver – a 49-year-old man – was arrested in the vehicle before being taken to Mascot Police Station.
During the arrest, police allegedly located and seized a knife in the man’s possession.
He was charged with:
- Police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously
- Drive conveyance taken without consent of owner
- Drive motor vehicle while licence suspended
- Custody of knife in public place
- Steal motor vehicle
- Breach of bail
The man was refused bail to appear before Bail Division Local Court 6 today.
