Driver reported over high-speed crash at Elizabeth

Police have reported a man for numerous traffic offences after a high-speed crash at Elizabeth last month.

It will be alleged that about 7.40pm on Monday 11 January, a Subaru Liberty sedan was being driven at high speed on Philip Highway at Elizabeth South, when it collided with a Nissan station wagon, causing minor damage to the vehicle. No one was injured in the Nissan.

The Subaru did not stop, and continued north on Philip Highway where it was detected by a fixed speed camera at a school crossing, travelling at 193km/h in a 60km/h zone.

Moments later, the car crashed into a tree outside a service station at Elizabeth. The driver, a 30-year-old Taperoo man was taken to hospital with injuries which are not considered to be life threatening.

Following investigations by traffic officers, the man was reported yesterday (Thursday 4 February) for two counts of aggravated driving without due care, failing to stop after a collision, driving at a dangerous speed and acts likely to cause harm.

He also received a fine for drug driving and driving unlicenced, after he tested positive to methamphetamine at the time of the crash.

Inspector Damien Eichner of the Road Policing Section says, “It is nothing short of a miracle that the reckless actions of the driver did not cause serious injury or death to himself or other road users. If it wasn’t for a tree outside the service station where he crashed, the car could have ended up inside the service station placing the lives of staff and customers at risk.

Road Policing Section officers will continue to target drivers that choose to ignore basic road safety and drive at ridiculous speeds. All instances of dangerous driving should be reported immediately via the Police Assistance Line on 131444.”
