Camden Council is urging drivers and all road users to refresh their knowledge of the road rules as Road Rules Awareness Week begins today.
Road Rules Awareness Week, running until Sunday 27 September, is a timely reminder that everyone has a role to play in keeping Camden’s roads safe.
As the state’s fastest-growing local government area, Camden welcomes approximately 100 new residents every week, meaning more people are using local roads, footpaths, shared paths and intersections every day. Whether it’s dropping children at school and commuting to work or walking, cycling or travelling around our growing town centres, residents are navigating increasingly busy roads as part of their everyday lives.
Mayor of Camden, Cr Vince Ferreri, said road rules were one of the simplest ways everyone could contribute to a safer community.
“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility, no matter whether you’re behind the wheel, riding a bike or walking,” the Mayor said.
“With more people living, working and travelling throughout Camden, it’s important that we all take the time to consider how our actions affect other road users.
“This Road Rules Awareness Week, I encourage everyone to take a few minutes to brush up on the rules, particularly around school zones, pedestrian crossings and sharing the road safely with cyclists and other vulnerable road users. You might be surprised by what you’ve forgotten since you first learnt to drive.”
Council is encouraging residents to take extra care around schools and busy pedestrian areas, obey speed limits, give way where required, remain alert and avoid distractions such as mobile phones while driving.
