Drivers urged to slow down as Territory students return to school

Northern Territory Police are reminding motorists to take extra care on the roads as Territory kids return to school from today, with increased traffic expected around schools, crossings and bus stops across the Territory.

Police will conduct proactive patrols and enforcement activities in school zones to help ensure the safety of children, parents and school staff during the busy return-to-school period.

Motorists are urged to obey school zone speed limits and remain alert for pedestrians and cyclists.

Superintendent Rick Magree said road safety is a shared responsibility and encouraged all road users to prioritise the safety of our Territory kids.

“With students heading back to school, we know the roads will be busier than usual, with parents squeezing in the morning drop-off before work and trying to beat the queue at pick-up time.

“We’re asking everyone to slow down around schools and stick to the speed limits.

“Kids can be unpredictable, especially during the busy school rush, so it’s important that drivers stay focused and keep an eye out for children crossing roads and getting on and off buses.

“Police will continue to conduct patrols and enforcement throughout the school term to help keep Territory families safe.”

Police are reminding motorists to:

  • Observe all school zone speed limits and signage.
  • Slow down and remain vigilant near pedestrian crossings and bus stops.
  • Avoid distractions while driving, including mobile phones.
  • Always buckle up your kids.

Anyone who witnesses dangerous driving behaviour is encouraged to contact police on 131 444.

The number of lives lost on Territory roads stands at 15.
