Members,

Young Tasmanians on the North-West and West Coast will have a new opportunity to get their driver’s licence and help secure a rewarding job through a new program launched today.

Minister for Skills, Training and Workforce Growth, Felix Ellis, said the North-West Driver Mentor Program would provide up to 90 young people with access to a driver mentor to support them complete the 80 hours required to sit their provisional driver’s licence test.

“The Rockliff Liberal Government is pleased to support this important project which will help more young people aged between 16 and 24 get a driver’s licence and ultimately support them into employment,” Minister Ellis said.

“We are very proud of this free community-led project that will provide genuine support to job seekers to remove barriers and have the life-changing impact of getting more people into work.

“Access to a driver’s licence can be a significant challenge for young people entering the workforce for the first time, especially in regional communities, so this program will massive benefits for participants.

Minister Ellis said Tasmania has seen incredible jobs growth in recent years with a consistently strong economy delivering more than 50,000 Tasmanian jobs than there was in 2014.

“Programs such as the North-West Driver Mentor Program aim to remove barriers and give freedom and flexibility to enable young people to better access education and employment opportunities,” Minister Ellis said.

The program is a partnership between West North West Working (NWJobs Hub) and Youth, Family and Community Connections.

The North-West Driver Mentor Program is funded by the Tasmanian Community Fund and by the Tasmanian Government, through Jobs Tasmania.
