Text The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has revealed which students have taken out the title of 2019 Tax, Super + You competition champions, and a share in the total cash prize pool of over $6,000.
Students from years 7-12 competed to pitch the most creative campaign that highlights the importance of tax and/or superannuation in Australia.
This year the competition saw a record of 178 entries from high school students across the country. Students from Western Australia submitted the highest number of entries (84), followed by New South Wales (45) and Victoria (34).
The judging panel, including well-regarded television presenter and personal finance expert David Koch, selected the winners based on four factors – originality, execution, value and relevance.
Assistant Commissioner and judging panellist Sally Bektas was blown away by the variety of entries received this year.
“We are so impressed by the creativity of the students’ entries; the quality gets better every year.
“Our annual Tax, Super + You competition is all about increasing the financial literacy of Australian high school students, and we are thrilled to see so many students showing a high level of enthusiasm and understanding of tax and super through their submissions,” Ms Bektas said.
In the junior category, Melbourne-based year 7 student Alma-Mia Marret scored both first place and the People’s Choice Award for her stop motion clay video about tax.
Geraldton-based year 11 student Ryan Carter came in first among the seniors, by showcasing his passion for music and videography in his rap entry.
Education through rap proved popular with the seniors group. Melbourne-based year 10 students, Kousitha Sivayogan and Sharanaa Jayaroopan took home the People’s Choice Award for their rap video, which draws attention to the range of community services funded through the taxation system.
