Electric vehicle joins Council fleet

Whitehorse City Council aims to reduce its carbon emissions with an additional electric van recently added to its fleet.

Whitehorse Councillor Bill Bennett said a fully electric Renault Kangoo van joined the fleet in September 2019 as a replacement vehicle.

“It will be the first of many environmentally sustainable commercial vehicles. The van will be used for township cleaning services throughout the municipality,” Cr Bennett said.

“The range of 220 kilometres is suited to an urban environment and operational needs. It is anticipated that the van will be used by Council for many years. The battery has a life expectancy of more than 10 years and is fully recyclable.”

The van was procured using best value practices, through an authorised Victorian dealer.

“Purchasing the electric vehicle is part of Council’s overall Sustainability Strategy, which involves a range of initiatives in reducing Council’s carbon footprint and introducing more sustainable vehicle options,” Cr Bennett said.

“At Whitehorse we are always looking for ways to make our operations more environmentally sustainable and reduce our carbon footprint. The van being 100 per cent electric, along with four other electric cars in our fleet, and a number of hybrid vehicles, is a positive direction in meeting our initiative.”

A compatible charging point has been installed at Council’s Operations Centre in Box Hill South.
