Elite level football returns to Tasmania

Nic Street, Minister for Stadia and Events

A-League club Western United is once again hosting a series of fixtures and coaching clinics this summer bringing top shelf football back to the Apple Isle.

The Rockliff Liberal Government are proud supporters of high-level football being played in Tasmania having established a $480,000 two-year agreement between the Rockliff Liberal Government and Western United.

Minister for Stadia and Events, Nic Street, said the Melbourne-based club would once again host men’s and women’s fixtures in Hobart along with two special junior football clinics in Launceston.

“After seeing our Matildas and Socceroos take on the world at the women’s and men’s world cups, Tasmanians are eager to see some big matches live,” Minister Street said.

“These three fixtures will deliver scintillating action for sports lovers, and we hope some big crowds will turn out to see high-quality football here at home in Tasmania.

“We’re also excited to be delivering clinics which will help provide skills pathways for junior football players, inspiring young Tasmanians to dream of donning the green and gold jersey in future.

“The Rockliff Liberal Government is a proud supporter of bringing elite level, live sporting events to our State,” he said.

The series kicks off with Western United’s A-League Mens side taking on Western Sydney Wanderers at North Hobart Oval on Saturday, January 27 from 5pm.

Then it’s a double header the following week when Western United’s A League Women side face Central Coast Mariners at 2.15pm and the men’s side take on Sydney FC in a re-match of last year’s meeting in Hobart from 5pm.
