Emergency Order extended for 200 Spencer Street

The City of Melbourne has advised residents of the NEO 200 apartment building on Spencer Street that the Municipal Building Surveyor has issued additional notices and orders extending the Emergency Order prohibiting access to the building.

Safety is the number one priority and residents will not be able to return to the building until the building’s essential safety measures have been restored.

These include fire and emergency measures such as smoke detection, smoke control, sprinkler systems and emergency warning systems.

Two additional Emergency Orders and a Show Cause Notice were issued by the Municipal Building Surveyor this afternoon to specify that the building should be vacant for up to a further 14 days.

These notices and orders can only be cancelled by the Municipal Building Surveyor once the Essential Safety Measures are recommissioned and confirmed as operational, and the building is fit for occupation.

Under the best case scenario, residents will be able to return to the building by next week but this is dependent on a number of factors.

The re-occupation of the building is being planned in stages, with safety being the number one priority.

The City of Melbourne’s Municipal Building Surveyor is assisting the building manager and body corporate (on behalf of the owners) with their responsibility to reinstate the essential safety measures.

It is likely that residents of the fire affected apartments may not be able to return to their property for a longer period as extensive rectification works are required.

After 7pm today (Wednesday 6 February 2019) the building will be secured and there will be no access to the building while repairs are being carried out.
