The Emissions Reduction Fund (ERF) now includes an improved method to credit eligible projects that increase carbon storage in agricultural soil.
The Australian Government introduced the estimation of soil organic carbon sequestration using measurement and models method following public consultation.
It will replace the measurement of soil carbon sequestration in agricultural systems method. Existing projects can transition to the new method. A new rule has also been made so that these projects can submit offsets reports within one month of transitioning to the new method.
The new method aims to reduce the cost of soil carbon measurement and increase project flexibility for proponents.
Soil carbon is identified as a priority low emissions technology under the Technology Investment Roadmap. The roadmap’s first Low Emissions Technology Statement recommended reducing the cost of soil carbon measurement to accelerate soil carbon uptake.
Soil carbon is one of 5 priority methods being developed in 2021 under the ERF.
