EOI Opens – McArthur River Mine Community Reference Group

NT Government

This is an important group that will have firsthand access to information regarding the operation and environmental performance of the mine including the findings of independent review bodies such as the independent monitor and panels of technical experts.

The Northern Territory Government is committed to ensuring environmental values are fully protected across the Territory and has been working diligently to ensure McArthur River Mining Pty Ltd (MRM) meets its environmental obligations under the Mining Management Act 2001.

The CRG will be chaired by an independent person appointed by the Northern Territory Government, and members will comprise local community representatives directly affected by the operation of McArthur River Mine, including those identifying as representative of local custodians and Traditional Owners.

The core function of the CRG is to communicate the mine’s performance and provide a mechanism to communicate community feedback to the Northern Territory Government and MRM.

Members will be appointed for a two year term.

MRM is subject to a robust regulatory framework. In November 2020, the Minister for Mining and Industry approved MRM’s Mining Management Plan 2020, which outlines the management of waste rock, ongoing environmental monitoring and eventual site closure, allowing the continuation of mining activities.

Approval of the Mining Management Plan and issuing of the Authorisation under the Mining Management Act 2001 is in keeping with the findings of the Northern Territory Environment Protection Authority (NT EPA) following assessment under the Environmental Assessment Act 1982 and approval granted under Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.

Conditions of Authorisation issued to MRM under the Mining Management Act 2001 include a requirement to support the establishment and operation of the CRG.

The mine provides employment for around 1000 employees and contractors.

The Northern Territory Government is committed to supporting development of mineral resources in a sustainable and responsible manner to maximise economic benefits, minimise environmental impacts and ensure long-term beneficial land uses after closure.
