The 2021 FDI World Dental Federation (FDI) Annual Report highlights that, despite the challenges of the pandemic, there have been exciting developments in the area of global health.
Pushed to innovate to respond to a range of unprecedented issues, FDI strengthened their governance systems, launched a range of new projects and the Vision 2030: Delivering Optimal Oral Health for All report “proposes strategies for … [improving] oral health, [reducing] oral health inequalities, and [contributing] to reducing the global burden of oral diseases.”
In addition to the International Dental Journal transitioning to a new open-access area which allows authors to share their work freely with researchers worldwide, FDI once again marked World Oral Health Day, a major annual initiative which seeks to improve the oral health literacy of people across the globe.
It’s one important facet of a global health and development agenda which also saw FDI hail a resolution put forward by WHO member state Sri Lanka which saw oral health placed firmly back on the agenda at the 74th session of the World Health Assembly in May 2021.
The Australian Dental Association was also praised in the annual report by FDI Executive Director Enzo Bondioni for its work in staging a completely virtual World Dental Congress in September 2021.

We are proud of the cutting-edge scientific programme that was delivered, which included a diverse array of speakers from around the world.”
