Everyone Together: 10 Year Aboriginal Affairs Strategy Launched

Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Selena Uibo, will tonight launch the Territory Labor Government’s new 10-year Aboriginal Affairs Strategy, Everyone Together.

The strategy is a blueprint for government agencies to put Aboriginal people at the centre of policy design and delivery, and to empower communities to determine their own futures.

It incorporates three Territory Labor Government priorities for Aboriginal Territorians: exploring Treaty options; the transfer of government service delivery to Aboriginal communities through local decision making; and ensuring land and sea ownership delivers on economic and social aspirations.

The strategy has 10 focus areas to improve outcomes for Aboriginal Territorians over the next decade: Truth and Healing; Language and Culture; Land and Sea; Children and Families; Housing and Essential Infrastructure; Health; Education; Safety; Justice; and Jobs and Economy.

In 2018, the Territory Labor Government commissioned Price Waterhouse Coopers – Indigenous Consulting to undertake consultation with Aboriginal Territorians, the Aboriginal community-controlled sector and NT Government agencies to inform the whole-of-government strategy.

The draft strategy was released for public consultation in September 2019. Feedback was provided online and in a series of face-to-face consultations throughout the Territory.

As stated by Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Selena Uibo:

“Investing in Aboriginal Affairs not only benefits Aboriginal Territorians, it benefits all Territorians.

“Everyone Together reflects the Territory Labor Government’s Aboriginal Affairs agenda priorities, which are centred on empowerment, local decision making, self-determination and ensuring land and sea ownership delivers on the economic and social aspirations of Aboriginal people.

“Our government is supporting local decision making in remote communities, we are investing $1.1 billion in remote housing over 10 years, to reduce overcrowding and we are investing in the expansion of early childhood services in remote communities, to give all children, no matter where they live, the best start in life.

“This new 10 year strategy builds on that investment by providing the blueprint by which all government agencies can put Aboriginal people at the centre of their policy decisions, to improve long-term outcomes across the Territory.”
